House Designs

Every building has a life of its own, and that life should support your life. A well-designed home respects the human scale and organic nature of its inhabitants, rather than surrounding them with empty, unusable spaces and artificial materials.

The homes at First Light Neighborhood are designed to provide the spaces that you need, with the right blend of coziness and bright, airy spaciousness. The architecture blends with the traditional fabric of New England while following the impulse of Rudolf Steiner found at the nearby Pine Hill Waldorf School and High Mowing School. Steiner's vision for architecture is often reflected in the scarcity of ninety-degree angles—the most obvious detail in a system carefully designed to support the freedom of the human spirit, rather than containing it in mechanical or industrial-feeling spaces.

We believe that a well-designed house is a better value than a "one-size-fits-all" house plunked down at random on a building site. Our homes are an alternative to the plastic boxes so common in today's speculative market. Their form, orientation, and finish materials all relate to the natural surroundings, keeping a low profile so as not to dominate the hill when viewed from afar.

The close-knit neighborhood in which these homes are set, and their porches and dooryard gardens, invite neighbors to interact with each other, while the layout and design of the homes preserves residents' privacy. Careful orientation for maximum winter sun exposure, roof overhangs to shade windows from the summer sun, and superinsulation all minimize utility costs, while natural materials inside and out promote healthy indoor air quality.

The interior layouts have been carefully thought-out to minimize "stress points" like the front entryway and to avoid odd, dead-end or uninviting spaces, while providing real, functional spaces that fit your lifestyle.

Windy Hill Associates combine decades of practical experience building homes that really work for people with the ancient Chinese science of space, shape, color, and material selection known as feng shui and the Steinerian impulse, creating houses that nourish the bodies, minds, and spirits of the people who live in them. And, if you find that some aspect of our designs doesn't quite fit, Windy Hill will work with you to customize the interior spaces of your home.

The Souhegan

The Souhegan, named for the river that flows along the north side of Abbot Hill and meets the Merrimack River in the Town of Merrimack, is designed to be flexible: these plans show 2,348 finished square feet of living space, with three bedrooms upstairs and a multipurpose room on the ground floor that could be a master bedroom suite, guest bedroom, or study. There are several lots the Souhegan can be placed on, some of which have the potential for a walk-out basement, which could be finished to add more living space. Base Price: $599,000.

Piscataquog

The South Branch of the Piscataquog river begins at Pleasant Pond in Francestown and gathers much of its strength from the small streams running off the shoulders of Winn and Rose Mountains in Lyndeborough and Crotched Mountain in Bennington and Francestown. A clear, swift trout stream near its headwaters, it empties into the Merrimack right in downtown Manchester by the Queen City Bridge.

The house that bears its name packs a lot of functional, bright space into a compact footprint. It has a master bedroom and two other bedrooms on the second floor and a home office/guest room/away room on the ground floor, with two full and one half baths. The open living, dining and kitchen area are filled with light from windows on three sides. The Piscataquog has 2,030 finished square feet of living space; many lots offer walk-out basements with the possibility of more finished area there. Base price: $499,000.

The Nissitissit

The Nissitissit, whose headwaters rise just south of First Light, flows south into the Nashua River in Massachusetts, which then turns northeast and flows back into New Hampshire, emptying into the Merrimack River in the City of Nashua. The Nissitissit plans shown here are for a 1,654 square-foot three bedroom, two bathroom house, all on one level, with an attached two-car garage. This plan can be placed on several lots within First Light, and can also be reduced to a two-bedroom, two-bath layout. Base Price: $459,000.
